Sunday Music: Eve of Destruction, Turtles
Aug. 18th, 2013 07:23 pmAlbum Title: Eve of Destruction
Why I Bought It: This is another of the five disks in the Complete Turtles collection.
What I Like (Political): "Eve of Destruction". This actually was the first version of the song to hit the airwaves, just a little before Barry McGuire's canonical cover. This isn't as good as McGuire, but it's not bad at all.
What I Like (Happy): "She'd Rather Be with Me". A song about (reciprocal) loyalty in love, with a good beat and cheery lyrics. Not a great song, but a fun one.
What I Don't Like (Unmelodic): "Down in Suburbia". A screed against materialism, racism, and various other things; I have to say, the Monkees (the Monkees!) did a better job of it with "Pleasant Valley Sunday". The tune is monotonous and the vocals are harsh.
What I'm Puzzled By (Wotthehell?): "House on the Hill". The narrator describes a very pleasant visit to what sounds to me like a high-class bordello....
Overall: Very mixed. In addition to the WILs above, there's a nice cover of "We'll Meet Again", an... interesting version of "It Was a Very Good Year", and "Think I'll Run Away" isn't bad. But "Guide for the Married Man" is insipid, and I don't know what the point of "Grim Reaper of Love" is. This is in my collection for completist reasons, for the most part.
