Album Title: Come On Come On

Why I Bought It: I asked for recs of country singers, and [profile] desert_vixen mentioned Carpenter. On her advice, I bought this album and, later, Party Doll.

What I Like (Silly): "The Bug". I understand that this was originally a Dire Straits song, but Carpenter made it her own. "Sometimes you're the windshield / Sometimes you're the bug".... Honorable Mention: "I Feel Lucky".

What I Like (Moody): "I Am a Town". Just a beautiful and understated picture of the soul of the small-town South, blurred (as such things always are) with mists of nostalgia and careful forgetting. Honorable Mention: "Rhythm of the Blues".

What I Like (Bittersweet): "He Thinks He'll Keep Her". From the new-bride happiness of the first verse, through the sorrowful scene with the suitcase, to the oddly triumphant last verse, a well-crafted arc of life.

What I Like (Defiant): "I Take My Chances". This is the studio version; Party Doll has the live version, which I don't like as much. "Now some people say that you shouldn't tempt fate / And for them I can not disagree / But I never learned nothin' from playing it safe / I say fate should not tempt me." I'll take that over "Invictus" any day.

Overall: This is another of my favorite albums. From the joyous and demanding "Passionate Kisses", to the challenge of "Walking Through Fire", to the melancholy "Only a Dream", Carpenter is wonderful. Bold, quiet, passionate, soft and lyrical - she does it all.

No romp for the doggies tonight. I opened the door for them and realized it was pouring down rain. Gracie stepped out and immediately bounced back in; Buster, sturdier, had to be called back.

Actually, though I forgot, it's been raining most of the day. NWS says there's a chance of snow overnight....
