Sunday Music: The Best of Sade
Jun. 24th, 2012 03:13 pmAlbum Title: The Best of Sade
Why I Bought It: I was familiar with a couple of her hits, and liked them well enough to take a chance on the rest.
What I Like (Pointed): "Smooth operator". Note that "smooth" is not a compliment here; "His eyes are like angels, his heart is cold".
What I Like (Defiant): "Pearls". A song that begins "There is a woman in Somalia" is not going to be puppies and ice cream; the song tells of her desperate and defiant struggle to live, and it's beautiful. Honorable Mention: "Jezebel".
What I Like (Passionate): "The sweetest taboo". Just lovely. Honorable Mention: "Kiss of life".
Overall: As clear a voice as Patsy Cline, as emotionally charged as Sheena Easton, as sweet as Mary Hopkin - Sade is simply a marvellous talent. The songs, with a couple of exceptions ("Pearls", "Jezebel") range over all the aspects of love: anticipation in "Please send me someone to love", fulfillment in "Your love is king", wistfulness in "Never as good as the first time", desperation in "Hang on to your love", all in that lovely voice. A wonderful collection.
