For several months now, one of the secretaries has been harassing me about the age of my office computer. Being a mulish sort - I do things in my own time, or not at all - I resisted, but eventually I admitted that the machine was abominably slow. (It's not as old as my old home computer, but it's close.) Conceding this, I asked for a new one, and she, the Chair, and I picked out the specs. The new computer will be installed sometime in the next week or so. (This will be a headache, as I have a lot of data files and software that will have to be transferred.)

Did this get her off my back? Of course not. Which is why I spent most of the last two days, with her help, cleaning up my office ("so there'll be enough room for the new computer", she says). Assorted no-longer-relevant papers went into the recycling bin, except for the old finals, which went to the shredder. A huge number of textbooks - some we used to use, others that we considered but rejected - went into boxes for the next fund-raiser by Pi Mu Epsilon, except for the ones which can't be safely sold to students (instructor's answer books and test banks, for instance) which also went for recycling. We brought a second bookcase in, and the remaining books, the ones I wanted to keep, wound up being reshelved. I'll probably haul the math books I have at home in, as there's now quite a bit of room on the shelves.

Yesterday I came home very tired. Today, less so, but I did take a nap after getting home.
