Just a few miscellaneous bits:
1. In 2008, I sent in my tax forms on April 15. In 2009, I sent them in on the 14th. This year, I will send them in tomorrow - the 12th. Gettin' better....
2. I spent a good chunk of last week revising and streamlining my geodesic-search algorithms. There were mishaps on the way, like the time when I started an untested algorithm and the computer got caught in a tight and memory-eating infinite loop. (Mathematica's panic button, Alt-comma, didn't work. Program Manager and "End process" didn't work. The only thing that worked was the off switch....) Then there was one of the weirdest bugs I ever ran into, but I'll save that for another post. I got most of the re-coding done before I left on Friday, but there was one chunk of code that, though I wasn't really happy with it, I still saw no alternative and just shoved it into the new version. Of course, Friday night, just before going to bed, I thought of a better way.... (I don't have Mathematica at home, so all I could do was write some pseudocode, which I've been replacing with genuine Mathematica code over the course of the weekend. I've mailed it to myself, so I can just cut and paste it into Mathematica when I get to the office.) The new version, with these revisions, is, I hope, much more efficient than its predecessor; it's certainly easier to understand!
3. The wrist problem receded considerably on Friday; there's still a little residual soreness, but it isn't hampering me in any significant way. I still have no idea what caused it.
4. I just finished Greg Bear's City at the End of Time, and I'm moderately pleased with it. It doesn't compare to his best work, but it didn't leave me bored (like the Darwin books) or revulsed (like Vitals). I might review it later. Still working my way through Caro's LBJ biography.
