Yesterday was a lo-ong day. (Tuesdays and Thursdays in general will be long days for me this semester.) I left the house at about 8:30 AM, and got home a little after 9 PM.
My classes went reasonably well, I think; I have only one complaint. The university, in its wisdom, has decided that classroom clocks are no longer a necessity, and they're being attrited away. After all, everybody has a cell phone nowadays; what do you need a big clock for? Setting aside the general flaws in this reasoning, I have personal reasons for objecting.
Two of my three classes were in clockless rooms. I was obliged to borrow timepieces from students in those two. In the first, someone lent me her cell phone. Unfortunately, the screen kept going dark. She told me how to light it again, but on the second or third pass, I accidentally turned on the camera. Another student took pity on my panic and handed me an honest-to-God wristwatch.
My trials were not over. My preference is to set the watch on the front table, so that I can glance at it as I pace back and forth, without interrupting anything. This watch would not lie flat. I tried draping it over the edge, and then over the corner, of a book, to no avail. I had to actually pick up the watch every so often to keep track of the time.
I shall have to begin bringing my pocket watch with me.
Grmph.
