Random Stuff, Mostly Silly
Jul. 8th, 2009 02:01 pm1. Does anyone else ever toy with pronouncing "logout" to rhyme with "ragout"?
2. Various sources tell me that one of the principal causes of injury to small dogs - e.g., Yorkies - is being stepped on. A couple of days ago, this very nearly happened here. I was setting up for dinner; the meal itself was in the microwave, the cloth placemat was in place, and a tall glass full of root beer sat in its appointed place. I believe I was bringing over a fork, when Gracie and my feet had an unexpected close encounter. What seemed like a couple of minutes (but was probably less than ten seconds) of flailing dance ensued (including one more light kick for Gracie, who then hared off to sanctuary), ending when I came up against the table and I caught my balance. Unfortunately, my left arm had enough momentum to collide with the glass....
To the left of the place setting was Webster's Third New International Dictionary; to the right, the Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics; toward the center of the table, numerous sheets of scratch paper, most covered with random mathematical notes. What to save?
The root beer was flowing rapidly towards the dictionary, so I grabbed it first, then the encyclopedia. The paper was an immediate lost cause (although if anything irreproducible had been on it, I would surely have tried), and, well, I have other placemats. Still a big mess....
3. I was thinking about one of those old post-apocalyptic stories - the kind that uses words like "Tizathy" and "Salibbidy" - and recalled the word "Loalnyawk". "Nyawk" is obvious, but I had never figured out where "loal" came from. Lower? It finally hit me today: "little old".
4. It's turning hot again - back to the mid-nineties in a couple of days. It makes more sense in July than in June, though. I shudder to think about August.
5. I've got to do a writeup about Janis Ian. That album of hers I bought (including the current song) is quite impressive.
