The combo player I bought, it turns out, is not a DVD recorder, but only a DVD player and VCR. I could live with that.
I began by disconnecting the old player and attempting to connect the new. The wiring instructions are not compatible with my twenty-five year old TV. (The manual mentions this possibility, and advises consulting... some other manual, which, if I ever had it, I no longer do.) Upon discovering this, I decided to reconnect the old player.
I can't find the manual for the old player, and my attempts to reconnect without the manual have been unsuccessful. I now have, not only a nonfunctional DVD player/VCR, but a nonfunctional TV. (The TV is not damaged, but I can't get it to do anything useful.)
Trying to cut the player out entirely, connecting the TV directly to the satellite box, has not worked either.
I give up. I will spend the remainder of the summer sans TV; when Fall Semester begins (and my paycheck goes back to normal) I will buy a new TV, a new combo player/recorder, and perhaps a new speaker system.
