Seniority

Summer semester has ended, and, with the retirement of one of my colleagues, I am now the seniormost member of the Math Department.

I just received notice of a retirement reception for someone in the Computer Science Department - someone who was hired a few years after I was.

Sigh. Tempus fugit. It's still a good many years before I expect to retire, but... tempus fugit.

I can see how this would be disorienting...

Look at it this way: the more seniority you have, the more wisdom is automatically accorded to you.
