You know the drill.

  • Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Diana Ross. An early favorite of mine; I think it's the brief spoken bit leading into the final chorus that caught me.

  • I Hope You Dance, Lee Ann Womack. Sure, it's a little schmaltzy, but for some reason it always makes me cry.

  • The Greatest, Kenny Rogers. Just a cute story about a little kid playing fungo.

  • 25 or 6 to 4, Chicago. I guess it's the backstory that appeals to me about this one. "Aw, jeez, it's 3:30 in the morning. Does anyone have any ideas?"

  • Leaving on a Jet Plane, Peter, Paul and Mary. Homesickness (even in anticipation) again - it'll always get me.

  • Nice To Be Here, the Moody Blues.

  • Acadian Driftwood, The Band. Some of the historical details aren't quite right, but how many pop songs are there about the Acadian diaspora? Just a neat song.

  • I Can't Make You Love Me, Bonnie Raitt. I've just recently gotten interested in her music; it's of variable quality, but this one suits her voice well.

  • Holly Holy, Neil Diamond. At the other pole from "Brother Love", this one thumps and hammers, almost harshly (or as harshly as Diamond is capable of).

  • Orinoco Flow, Enya. This was the first Enya I ever heard; I like the wordplay as much as anything else in this song.

Original, yes. Synth version, no.

I was raised on Peter, Paul, & Mary's "Greatest Hits" album; it's my mom's all-time favorite [along with Jim Croce].

That's the "Ten Years Together" album, isn't it? I'm still a little annoyed that the CD version omits "Cruel War", but it's still a great album.

It's a great album, but rather short. Instead of getting my own copy, I wound up getting two 2-cd sets off eBay, for about the same price.
