Playlist 14

Since I don't have much to say today, and since I've moved on to my next playlist, here's another round of Top Ten, for whatever it's worth.

The best from this list seem mostly to be from the '60s.

• You Are So Beautiful, Joe Cocker. There's something about such a harsh voice singing so tenderly that appeals to me.


• Nashville Cats, the Lovin' Spoonful. One of those aw-shucks, artfully artless pieces. It's a distant relative of "Johnny Be Good" and "Tennessee Flat-top Box".


• Just Dropped In, Kenny Rogers. This isn't really one of my favorite Rogers songs, but it has its moments. Rogers did a fair amount of work, early on, that bordered on rock - "Something's Burning" is another in that group - and I like a lot of it.


• House of the Rising Sun, the Animals. One of the classics.


• Down on the Corner, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Just fun; this kind of joyful revelry is one of the things CCR does best.


• The Boxer, Simon and Garfunkel. What can I say? I like cannons.


• This Shirt, Mary Chapin Carpenter. She is so good at nostalgia.


• Anything for You, Gloria Estefan. It was her "Can't Stay Away From You" that first caught my attention, and this is in the same league.


• Always, Patsy Cline. I like just about everything of hers; I find the clarity and strength of her voice very satisfying.


• You Know What I Mean, the Turtles. The chorus, and that driving da-da-DA-da-da-DUM that begins it, is what makes this song for me.

There are three on this list that I've never heard (!). I love the Boxer, but it always brings tears to my eyes.

Er, my mistake. I meant *four.* (g) Yes, you were right about the three, but add to the unheard list the Patsy Cline song, as well.

The Nashville Cats song makes me smile when I hear it: "They's clean as Mountaiiiin Deeewwww"

Duh. Mea culpa, again. I looked up the lyrics after I sent it:

Nashville Cats, play clean as country water
Nashville Cats, play wild as mountain dew
Nashville Cats, been playin' since they's babies

I'd always thought "play" was "they's." Nothing new; half the time, I make up my own interpretations that way (g).

If we can manage our entries, I wonder why we can't manage our replies...Yes, I'm one of those who often goes back to fix nitpicky things (g).
