The news is better. He has a nasty infestation of coccidia parasites, but that can be handled by a course of medication. (For safety's sake, Murphy will have to receive the same treatment.) The bloodwork showed no abnormalities other than what you'd expect from the infestation, which rules out a number of worse possibilities. They've hydrated him, and he's quite a bit perkier.

I'll be able to bring him home tomorrow morning. There are some precautions I'll have to take around the house and yard to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence, but other than that - and the medications - it looks like clear sailing.

Thanks, everyone, for the support.

So very glad to hear it. I've been worrying all day.

Oh, I am so glad to hear this! Your original description was just what happened to Shadowfax when his kidneys went. And that one did not have a happy ending.

Huzzah for old Ben!

Oh, Stoutfellow! What a relief. It sounds weird to say, "Yay, for little, ugly bugses!" but you know what I mean.

I hope that this means a total return to good health on Ben's part for a *really* long time. Pats to the Boyz!

I haven't been on LJ for a few days, so I haven't seen the original post yet, but I am so glad that Ben is going to be okay. Having a pet get ill is almost more frustrating than having a child (at least one over about three) get ill -- at least the child can tell you where it hurts.

I hope he recovers quickly and completely and you three have many more happy years together.

How relieved you must be! I'm so happy for you and for the little four-legged fellow. But what are these parasites and how did he contract them? I've never heard of them--maybe cats don't get them?

Big ol' ear scritches and tummy rubs to Ben-Boy!
