Just a quick post to say that I arrived safely in San Diego last night. Though I missed the gift exchange, I did receive my gift - DVDs of the Winona Ryder Little Women (I already had the Hepburn version) and of Passport to Pimlico - and a platterful of leftovers. I've also made my annual raid on Barnes & Noble ($235 of booty, to be described later), and am resting up and rejoicing in the Chargers' victory over the Colts yesterday.

More later; I'm still adjusting to Pacific Time.

Thanks; it's been quiet so far. O. is going to visit with one of her grandkids (the one I haven't met yet) tomorrow or the next day, which will be nice. (She was the one who got me the DVDs; they were apparently hard to find - at least, Passport to Pimlico was - so I'll have to thank her appropriately.)

NOOOOO, that doesn't sound familiar!

Enjoy your vacation, be safe.

Yes, it seems to be a chronic - and surprisingly widespread - affliction. Thanks for the good wishes!

I love the Winona Ryder version of Little Women. Do let us know what you think of it.

As for rejoicing, I still can't get over the fact that the Seattle Seahawks -- the *Seattle Seahawks* -- are 12 and 2. How the heck did *that* happen???

Will do. It may be a while before I get around to watching it, though.

Damfino. "The world turned upside down..." The Raiders are down, the Rams are down, the Seahawks are up - have you seen dogs and cats sleeping together lately?

Not to mention the Forty-Niners. If the Seahawks make it past their first playoff game, it'll be the first time since I started paying attention at least 15 years ago.

Hey, maybe the Chargers and the Seahawks will wind up in the playoffs together (or are the Chargers doing *that* well?). Wouldn't that be a trip?

At least my cats are sensibly sleeping with each other.

Yes and no. The playoff situation is still unsettled, but the Chargers still have a shot; oddsmakers are laying 15-1 against. (It's embarrassing. They crushed the Patriots and beat the Colts, but they lost to Miami, which is not doing well this year. Their five losses have been by a total of about 13 points...) We shall see.

Chargers v. Seahawks: Wouldn't that be a hoot for the carbonelle household. "A House Divided" isn't even in it!

They're taking a leaf out of the Atlanta Sports Team book and "building you up buttercup, just to let you down", the better to splat you with later.

I have been following San Diego teams for nigh on forty years now, and I've learned the lesson: anything above .500 is victory. The rest is gravy.

No expectations. No disappointments. No let-downs.

No fun.

The fun is in seeing just *how* they'll do it. Remember the episode of Star Trek: Next Generation when they thawed out the folks frozen in the 20th century? The country singer said, "After 300 years, I bet the Braves have found whole new ways to lose." [We have that episode on permanent tape for that line alone.] *That*'s what I watch for. Of course, I don't care very much either way, and can enjoy the whole panoply of the floor show. :)

No fun? Nonsense. As long as the gravy keeps coming, I'll keep ladling it on; I just won't complain when it runs out.
