I've been tagged by
allyra: Write 20 random facts about yourself then tag the same number of people as minutes it takes you to write the facts.
1. I was born in Germany, but left when I was two and have never gone back.
2. My first pet was a turtle named Creeper.
3. My first science fiction, I think, was Andre Norton's Star Ranger.
4. I taught myself to tie my shoes (relatively late) with the help of a piece of coral with a hole in it.
5. At one time, I was a member of the second-best Ultimate Frisbee team at the University of Chicago. My passing was so-so, but I was a pretty good receiver.
6. Once, in Little League, I was only a few feet from one of my teammates when he turned an unassisted triple play.
7. At various times, I gave serious thought to law, the military, and the clergy as careers.
8. I'm a genuine ivory-tower type: I have never had a paying job outside of academe.
9. I've studied French, Spanish, Latin and Russian formally and German informally, but all that's left is some ability to read the first two. (Well, I can sometimes puzzle out German, and I can read German mathematics unless it's in Fraktur.)
10. The first thing I did after gaining tenure was to buy a house. The second was to bring home a dog.
11. I'm fairly happy with my body, all things considered.
12. The main thing that keeps me from becoming addicted to computer games is poor reflexes - I can't handle real-time games.
13. I have been in legitimate fear for my life on three occasions - once in a swimming pool, once on a rush-hour freeway, and once on an icy street.
14. I think Rome is the most beautiful city I've ever seen, but Paris is the most fun.
15. In my youth, I actually read the first six or seven of the Gor books.
16. The first adult poem I remember reading was "Ozymandias".
17. I occasionally muse upon "the road not taken", but I'm generally happy with how things have turned out. Mostly.
18. I love to sing, but I'm self-conscious about it these days; my days in church choir are long behind me.
19. In some ways, I could be perfectly content never leaving the house, but I think it would be very bad for me.
20. I own a large collection of tapes and DVDs of movies; I have 1295 of them, out of a wish-list of 1917 movies. I've only watched about 300 of them, though.
I was never very good at tag, though.

Date: 2005-09-23 04:06 pm (UTC)I was going to put *this* poem in my journal as one of my favorite poems. Ah, how ephemeral the power and the workings of Man.
