I took a Russian history course in college; to the extent that I can claim to know much about the subject, or could have claimed to thirty years ago, I credit a variety of books and Professor Czap’s lectures, not one single source. Still, you might want to read Richard Pipes’s RUSSIA UNDER THE OLD REGIME. Pipes had an interpretation that not everyone would agree with, which you may want to keep in mind; still, his book is informative and accessible.
