I'm currently reading a short story, "Shadows in the Wood", by Jennifer Roberson. It's a Robin Hood/Arthuriana mashup, in which Robin and Marian encounter Merlin, just freed from Nimue's prison; Merlin's goal is to so arrange things that England will never again be invaded, not by Angles and Saxons, not by Normans - by no-one.

Of course, one is meant to think of Napoleon and Hitler in reading this. Of course, that little (excuse me, Glorious) event in 1688 doesn't count as an invasion, oh no.

(I will grant that the invaders in that case were invited by a faction of the English. That doesn't make it any less an invasion.)

People forget it because William left no children and the Anglo-Dutch kingdom which he intended to leave behind evaporated as England went back to the rule of Queen Anne. So the Orange monarchy registers as a blip compared to the Hanoverian period.

And if the Glorious Revolution counts, then I think that Henry Tudor’s invasion in 1485 counts as well.
