Yesterday morning, the dogs were out of food, so I decided to make a quick run over to Shop'n'Save. As I entered, I was intercepted by a store employee, who told me the power had just gone out and they didn't know how long it would be out. I muttered, "Dogs gotta eat!" and headed for Schnucks, just half a block away. As I went into Schnucks, I mentioned to one of the workers that they might get more customers - power was out at SnS. He told me power had been out there, too, but just for a minute or two.

Hmm, said I. I bought a bag of Dog Chow and headed for home. When I got there, the computer was asking for my password to complete rebooting, and my bedside clock was flashing "12:25" at me.

Signing in to my computer, I checked my e-mail; one of my students wanted to know how her grade stood just now. (Next week is finals week.) The information was on my office computer, so I tried an off-site login, to no avail. I knew what had happened; when I got to work, my office computer was shut down, as a result of the power outage.

I don't know why it took me so long to get from "hyperlocal power outage" to "mall power outage" to "neighborhood power outage" to "city power outage".
