Of course, I've heard the song "Mercedes Benz" before. But somehow, hearing Janis Joplin sing it, a capella, with the introduction about "deep social significance" and the little giggle at the end, makes it much funnier.

I like the sound of The Band, but I very rarely have even the foggiest notion what they're singing about. ("I Shall Be Released" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" are among the exceptions.)

Pirates! looks like it might be fun, but it keeps crashing on me. On the other hand, a recent post by [livejournal.com profile] rfmcdpei reminds me of the pleasures of another Sid Meier game, Alpha Centauri. I haven't played that in a long time; maybe I'll break it out. (If this computer will run it. There've been a few games which worked fine on my last computer, which seem fragile on this one.)

I bought some clothes at Kohl's today. Now, I'm eternally grateful to them for opening a store near me, thus freeing me from the necessity of buying ill-fitting and low-quality clothes at K-Mart or Target, and I'm willing to forgive them for repeatedly asking me if I'd like to establish an account with them, but somehow the way they reassure me that it's okay when I say "no" irks me.

I've deleted Astronomy Picture of the Day from my friends list. I like them, but they keep putting up extra-width pictures that screw up the rest of the list. I'll just have to look in on them the old-fashioned way.

Pirates! is indeed a load of fun (and yes, I finally got it to work.) There's even something of an overarcing plot to the thing (you have to find your lost family), but it's not vital to the game beyond upping your Fame points.

Was there anything in particular you did that got it to work, or did it just mysteriously decide to behave? Mine tells me I've got the wrong disk if I start up with disk 1, tells me "use the original disk, not a copy" if I start up with disk 2 (but then starts up anyway), lets me enter a town or two, and then, while I'm sailing, crashes. (Windows primly tells me, "Pirates! has encountered a problem and has to shut down.")
