Album Title: The Essential ELO

Why I Bought It: Primarily for "Livin' Thing".

What I Like (Playful): "Roll Over Beethoven". A Chuck Berry classic, but I think ELO's version is almost as good. As usual with ELO's work, the instrumentation is one of the prime appeals to me. Honorable Mention: "Rock and Roll Is King".

What I Like (Soaring): "Livin' Thing". The vocal ball passes back and forth between different voices, to excellent effect. (Hmm. According to Wikipedia, the British music magazine Q rated this song as the number one "guilty pleasure" song of all time. Strange; I feel no guilt (or shame) whatever about liking it.)

What I Like (Bass Line): "Calling America". A song about a love who's far away and desperate efforts to contact her via satellite; what I like most is the chorus, with its repeated line "calling America" in the low register, counterpointing the distressed higher voices. When this one comes on, I sing along with that one line, hitting it as low and hard as I can. Love it.

Overall: I like the entire album. "Evil Woman", "Telephone Line", "Strange Magic", "Do Ya", "Sweet Talkin' Woman" - it's all good. ELO is an exotic flavor, for me; I don't know of any other group that makes music quite like theirs. (If there is one, let me know!)
