Daily highs having finally settled in the 60-70F range, I decided to stage the spring shearing today. Before showering, I shaved off my beard. (Imperfectly; I discovered I only had one razor blade cartridge left, and it usually takes two.) Afterward, I dressed and headed out, contemplating a minor grocery run on the way back - just a few staples, to tide me over to tomorrow's weekly run. I stopped by the ATM at Shop'n'Save to pick up some cash, then turned south.
I walked along the strip mall where Custom Clips has a shop, but as I approached the well-remembered location, I saw one of those mall-proprietor "CLOSED" signs in the window, and within I saw the desolation that goes with that sign. I continued on for about half a mile, hoping that it had only changed location, but no dice. Sighing, I turned for home. To console myself, I decided to shop at Schnucks, which still stocks Ben & Jerry's. I picked up a few items - cereal, salad topping, etc. - before reaching the ice cream cabinet. After examining the B&J selection, I chose a pint of Chunky Monkey and one of Pistachio Pistachio, and headed for the checkout.
When I reached the checkout, there was only one pint of ice cream in my cart. The Chunky Monkey was nowhere to be seen. I frowned - where could it have gone? - but accepted my fate and paid for what remained.
On the way home, I passed the Custom Clips location - which now was bright-lit and open, though under a different name. Unfortunately, I was now carrying two bags of groceries and could not stop in. In any event... hadn't it not been there, not fifteen minutes earlier?
I continued homeward, feeling a bit like a side character in an H. Beam Piper novel. What would I find at home? One dog? No dogs? A St. Bernard and a Lab? Or Buster and Gracie?
Fortunately, the last of these proved true. But I'm not leaving home again today. I'll get my haircut on Monday - if there's a shop there that day....
