Album Title: The Definitive Collection
Why I Bought It: On a whim. (I'm not sure Stevie counts as Motown, but he did have a song or two on my Classic Motown anthology album, so....)
What I Like (Sweet): "You Are the Sunshine of My Life". This was a hard choice; there are a number of songs of this general character on this album - "Signed Sealed Delivered", "For Once in My Life", "I Was Made to Love Her" - but I think I like this one best. Put the others on the Honorable Mention list.
What I Like (Nostalgic): "Sir Duke". This goes in the same general category as "Rock and Roll Heaven", but it's mellower and looks further back, to rock's roots in the blues and soul. Honorable Mention (although more general): "I Wish"
What I Don't Like (Disconnect): "Living for the City". Most of the song seems innocuously pleasant, if a bit sad, until it suddenly morphs into the opening scenes of "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang". I don't mind being reminded of injustice, but the abrupt shift of tone jars me.
Overall: This is a good, listenable album; there's nothing in it that I really love, but there's music to smile to ("Hey Love"), to boogie to ("Boogie On Reggae Woman"), to shake one's head at ("Part-Time Lover"). "Superstitious", "I Just Called to Say I Love You", "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" - lots of good stuff.
