Album Title: Anyone Who Had a Heart, Dionne Warwick

Why I Bought It: This was a long time ago. As I recall, I had a mental category which included Roberta Flack, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, and Dionne Warwick. Why it included those four and no others is beyond recalling. But, anyway, I had albums by Flack and Ross, and when I noticed this one I bought it to help fill in the category. (I do this sort of thing from time to time. It's why I have a Laura Nyro album - because she fit in a category....)

What I Like (Homesick): "Do You Know the Way to San Jose?" Never mind the fact that San Jose is now the third largest city in California (and the tenth largest in the country); this is just a beautiful song. I file it alongside "Midnight Train to Georgia".

What I Like (Come Home): "Message to Michael". This is sort of the flip side of "San Jose", and close kin to "Please Come to Boston".

What I Like (Remonstrance): "Alfie". I also have Cher's cover, but I think it works better with Warwick's soft, high voice than with Cher's brass.

What I Like (You Sure About That?): "I'll Never Fall in Love Again". At least until tomorrow.... Slightly silly, but I think most people have been there at one time or another.

Overall: Her voice isn't suited to anything particularly deep, but it's a sweet voice, and even when she's singing about heartbreak ("Trains and Boats and Planes", "Didn't We") she's easy on the ears and mind. Not a great album, but just about all of it is nice to listen to. Mostly background music, but occasionally deserving of more attention than that.
