In one of Dorothy Sayers' essays, she speaks of the concept of "being on the wrong bus". She objects strongly to this: "In the eyes of God and the London Transit Authority, it is a perfectly good bus, going on its appointed rounds. It happens to have a wrong passenger." (Or words to that effect.) With that in mind, suffice it to say that last night I was a wrong passenger.

I blame no one. The situation at the stop was a confusing one, blended from a tired and stressed driver, a misleading sign, and a number of very cold would-be riders. At any rate, instead of the counterclockwise bus that would have borne me home, I found myself on the clockwise bus, headed for the transit center. Worse, most of the buses were by this time out of service, and the one I was on was half an hour overdue for that status. Fortunately for me, the driver asked for and received permission to make one last run, taking me to my stop and returning. (In my experience, Madison County Transit bus drivers are uniformly polite, friendly, and kind, despite the stereotypes.)

This week I didn't feel like working from a recipe and making a big, all-week dish. Instead I bought a bunch of Stuff: things that I could whip up into any of several comfortable dishes without much planning, time, or effort. Eggs, potatoes, green peppers, a hunk of cheddar, bacon, mushrooms... I fixed bacon and fried potatoes yesterday, and I'm thinking about an omelette for today.

Ten more days....

On Friday of next week, I will go down to the local animal shelter. Plan A is to select two puppies and bring them home, but a lot depends on what dogs they have; I may wind up with one or two adult dogs. I've chosen that day because it's the Friday before spring break, so that I'll have almost a week and a half to acclimate it/them to its/their new home.

Ooooo, oooo. Perfect ingredients for Smothered Spuds!

Chop 2 or 3 slices of bacon; cook to crisp. Pour off excess grease, saute some chopped onion, bell pepper, mushrooms. Drain all well.

Bake a potato, microwaving is fine. Working quickly so it doesn't cool off too much, peel the potato (if you don't eat peels) and chop roughly. A little salt, a little butter, a little pepper, all to taste. Top with bacon, onion, bell pepper, some shredded cheese. A good side with this is chilled tomatoes, either a sliced large one or a handful of cherry or grape tomatoes.

The only thing I would do differently is to add green chile or make a sauce of the toppings (except for the cheese--sprinkle that) using mild green enchilada sauce. But if you're not a fan of chile, or don't have it on hand (or can't get a good brand where you are), then it's skip-able.

What a wonderful bus driver! He should get a cookie. Lots of cookies, or items to that effect.

Looking forward to hearing about your new housemates.

:)

Love, C.

I'll have to try that. I don't have any onion at the moment, though.

I made a plateful today. Tasty and filling, though I may have to work on the proportions. Thanks!
