Miscellany
Oct. 25th, 2008 10:27 am1. David Weber's Honor Harrington series is not exactly known for humor, but the bit in Flag in Exile when Honor sees the "men with clubs" going into the park had me laughing for quite a while.
2. Young asiago cheese is excellent, and - with good quality ham - makes a good sandwich filling. Aged asiago deserves to be eaten on its own.
3. I'm still reading Phillips' The Cousins' Wars, and I've decided that I need to learn more about British politics at the time of the English Civil War and during the American Revolution. (So much to learn, so little free time!)
4. Mathematica is a tremendously useful tool, but I find it frustrating, sometimes, to find that a certain thing is true without having any insight as to why. (My current Master's student's project has revealed what looks like an extremely interesting geometrical configuration, with many unexpected properties - but I have no idea why the things she's discovered are true. "Algebra yields information; geometry yields understanding.")
5. I really ought to write some more music posts. I still want to discuss Sophie B. Hawkins, but I also should talk about Bonnie Raitt and about Crosby, Stills and Nash. (I finally got an album with the full version of "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes", and there's lots of good stuff on it.)

Which is why our Civil War was the revolution in this country. Which then the southern oligarcy immediately turned around again, but nevermind.
