I'm pretty much over the cold now - still a little phlegmy, but otherwise OK. This one held on longer than usual.

Thursday, when I decided not to come in, I called the office to let them know. Unfortunately, no one was in, so I had to leave the message on voice mail. I asked them to put up signs in my classroom, and also to tell the other professor who's been giving me a lift home T/Th evenings. Well, someone bollixed the voice mail system, so they didn't get the message. I had to apologize to both of my T/Th classes, and to the professor. (They did get my message on Friday, so that class at least was notified.)

This evening, Murphy got upset with me for not feeding him Right Now, and he took it out on the octopus-thingy. (Actually, it only has four appendages and a head, but when he's playing with it it seems like more.) It has now lost about half its volume. I had to pick fluff out of his teeth.

Tuesday night, some of my students asked when Math 420 (advanced abstract algebra) and Math 400 (history of modern mathematics) would be offered again, hoping for Spring and Summer '05 respectively. I told them that they weren't on the schedule, but that I could possibly arrange to teach closed-enrollment classes. We'll see how that develops.

The Padres have been struggling lately, but today they wrapped up a three-game series with the Cardinals, taking two out of three at home. This is remarkable because: a) the Cardinals have owned the Padres for years (even Tony Gwynn couldn't hit against them); b) the Cards beat Jake Peavy, the Padres' best pitcher this year, in the series; c) the Cards have the best record in the league this year and came into town riding a nine-game winning streak; and d) the Padres have a much better record on the road than at home (they're just about at .500 at Petco Park, and about ten games over on the road). So I'm pleased with that. I came into the season figuring that the Padres would finish second or third in the NL West, and that looks about right. It's a huge improvement on last year's worst-in-the-league performance.

I decided to go with Ryoma, and it's very interesting so far. I've just reached the point when he decided to go ronin, in the belief that reform could best be achieved via a national organization rather than working through the individual clans.
