Yes, I read that, and that particular passage cracked me up.

However, when you've had a phenomenal shock, it is quite amazing the things you do. I saw someone committ suicide by jumping in front of a train once. I very solicitously contacted the husband of a hysterical woman who saw it too via her mobile, waited till he arrived, then got on the tube (from the same station) and went to work. It wasn't until I noticed I had been staring at my monitor for over an hour, and that my hands were shaking too much to type that I realised that perhaps work wasn't the place I needed to be right then.

So, my interpretation of the bishop's action was that his brain took refuge in routine, much like mine did on that shocking occasion. Logic? That's something else. :-)
