Weren't you recently thinking of breaking down and buying a cell phone? Unlike the many people I see who seem to have them semi-permanently attached to their ear, I mainly carry mine in case of situations such as this. Although wouldn't have helped with the walk, at least you could have called in and notified them you wouldn't be able to make it.
