Mama Bear

When I made my Waldorf salad last week, I used Braeburn apples, on a whim. I'd never tried them before.

Braeburn apples are the Mama Bear of apples, neither as tart as, say, Granny Smiths nor as sweet (and bland) as Delicious apples. Here, at least, they cost about twice as much as Delicious, but they're worth it.

This has been a Public Service Announcement.

Braeburns are right up there on my favorite apple list. I have a half dozen in the fruit bowl now! Our top fave is a FRESH true old type Jonathan, which are hard to find these days. Also acceptable Romes, Granny Smith and if there is nothing better, Gala.

Sigh. Some days I feel... you know the passage from Memory, after Illyan shows off his "prosthetic memory", and Miles wonders what he'll discover next? Sometimes I feel like that. (Hey! There's this stuff called "water", and it's really really good!)

I think I go the other way sometimes. There is TOO MUCH to see and do and taste and if you have to ponder and make choices all the time, ka-pow, your brain explodes!

Or maybe that just explains me. :)

I think I was programmed early about the apples, though. I had a book as a child about, I believe, The Apple Family. They had a bunch of kids, all named after different varieties of apples. Also, apples must be my favorite fruit, because I eat them the most, so that's probably why I have them all rated in my mind. :)

I'm afraid I'm of the post-chip Illyan sort also. I tend to stick to the straight and narrow, i.e., things *I* already know about, and it's such a nice surprise when I find something that's new and delightful - to me! Keep posting about them; maybe I'll even try them sometime (g)!

Is that the one where they name the boys Baldwin & MacIntosh, & the mom is all excited to name the girl Ann?

That sounds right, I bet it is! I think it was called Mr. Apple's family or something like that....

Braeburns can be pretty good. May I recommend Nittany apples, and Honeycrisps if you can find them? (I've only seen Honeycrisps at the farmers' market. I get Nittanies there, too, but I once saw them at Whole Foods.)

I'll look into those. Shop'n'Save's selection (in fruit, as in most things) is erratic, but sometimes they surprise me.

Granny Smiths used to be my favorite as a teenager but I ran into Braeburns at Duke and I love them. I was very happy to be able to get them here too. I tend to have one with lunch every day. YUMMY!!

Great on salads too. I created this salad last summer -- cook shrimp in olive oil, chilli powder, garlic powder (more garlic than chilli) and flaked coconut, then throw on a salad made up of lettuce, apple pieces, avocado chunks, tomato chunks, and whatever other veggies you think might work. But those were the main ingredients. Yummy! But, for us, something nice and refreshing in the summer, so it's been a while since we've had it. :-)

Ooh. That salad does sound good. I'll keep it in mind.

Cool! I'm glad. It's really pretty easy to do. By the way, we'd usually get the frozen precooked shrimp and just thaw it out on the stove and add the spices to flavor. So not really having to cook much there.

But yeah, I'd think about it again when it's hotter! :-)

As any hobbit philosopher worth his mushrooms will tell you, It's All About The Dinner. :)

[savors the food post.]
