A slightly different Senate statistic:
In every election cycle since 1992, the number of women in the Senate has either held steady or increased. Last night did not break the streak. Even though Senators Claire McCaskill and Heidi Heitkamp were beaten by men, three seats shifted from male to female: Nevada (Dean Heller > Jacky Rosen), Tennessee (Bob Corker > Marsha Blackburn), and Arizona (Jeff Flake > either Kyrsten Sinema or Martha McSally). (Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi faces a runoff against Mike Espy, but is a prohibitive favorite to win.) That brings the total number of women to twenty-four, of whom sixteen or seventeen (depending on the Arizona result) will be Democrats.
