Reading Lyell on geology, I am struck by the apparent fact that the currently standard division of rocks (igneous/sedimentary/metamorphic) was not yet in use in his time; in particular, metamorphic rocks were not recognized as a separate type. I have to wonder when this classification was first mooted, and by whom. (Googling "rocks classification history" yields unsatisfactory results.) Does anybody ([personal profile] nlbarber?) have any information on this?
