I buy more than one kind of treat for my dogs: regular treats, given several times a day, and special treats, once a day at most. Currently, for special treats, I give them Beneful Dental Twists. These come in bags, of two kinds: ten regular twists, or twenty-four mini-twists. Given the sizes of the treats and of my dogs, I generally buy the mini-twists. Buster and Gracie love them; their bouncing as I open the other bag is as nothing compared to their frantic joy when I open up the Dental Twists.

Now, I hand out Twists two at a time - one per dog. Being a mathematician, I have been surprised to find, on more than one occasion, a single Twist remaining in the bag. I finally decided to actually count the treats; I spent the last couple of weeks making tick-marks on a convenient sheet of paper each time I gave the dogs treats. When the bag was empty, there were twenty-two ticks. Thinking about it, I couldn't be sure that I hadn't forgotten to make marks one day. Today, then, when I brought home a new bag, I decided to immediately count them all. After opening the bag, I gave treats to Buster and Gracie and dumped the rest into a bowl, which I then counted.

Including the two that I had given out at the beginning, the bag contained twenty-six treats.

I am semi-seriously considering counting each bag I buy for, say, the next six months, to see what the distribution is like.

C. J. Cherryh - to my mind, a greatest living SF writer - has finally been named an SFWA Grand Master.

I love the Chanur books, Downbelow Station, and Cyteen above all the rest; the Morgaine series and the Faded Sun trilogy stand next, and I have a fondness for Voyager in Night, Hunter of Worlds, and the Rusalka series, although I'll grant they're nowhere near as good as the others. Ooh, and I'm forgetting Merchanter's Luck and Rimrunners. Can't say I'm exactly fond of Angel with a Sword, and I long since discarded my copies of Hestia and Wave Without a Shore, but everybody's entitled to the occasional clunker. Still reading the atevi books....

Prosit, C.J.!
