I've listened to a YouTube video of "Ode to Billie Joe" several times in the last week or so, and I have a question for someone with better musical training and/or ear than I have.
The accompaniment on that song is pretty much understated, but, repeatedly, there's a bit where Bobbie Gentry's words are punctuated by a low and mournful "da-da-dumm". I'm ashamed to admit that I can't even tell whether it's a wind instrument or a string, but I'm thinking it's either one of the lower woodwinds - oboe, probably - or perhaps a viola. Can anybody tell me for sure? The video is here.
