Faulty Platforms
Jan. 19th, 2016 09:29 amI've resumed reading Derek Wilson's book on the English Reformation, and was struck by the following passage, concerning the redoubtable Hugh Latimer.
During Lent 1533 he engaged in a series of sermons in Bristol. He was challenged by [a] local priest, William Hubberdyne, who violently denounced Latimer in sermons of his own. Citizens turned out in force to hear the rivals thundering from their pulpits, a contest which ended with the death of Hubberdyne, whose pulpit collapsed as a result of his ferocious and athletic oratory.I have trouble picturing exactly how that last bit happened, but it must have been a sight!
