Surprise!

Wednesday afternoon, when I got in to the office, I was - I'll admit it - kind of dragging. Hump day, y'know. When I unlocked the door, my eyes fell upon the bookcase. I saw that one of the speakers for my computer was sitting on the third shelf. (The other was there too, but off to one side and I didn't see it just yet.) Brow furrowed, I continued in, dumping my shoulder bag on the spare chair and swinging around into my own chair.

There were two computer monitors on my desk. The tower case which held my computer was gone. In its place was another, more squatly built computer; one of the monitors was sitting on it. Still puzzled, I hit the C-A-D combination to wake the computer up. The login screen asked for the password of... one of our computer gurus. I frowned, clicked on "Change User", and logged in as myself. I spent a few moments amusing myself with making the cursor slide from screen to screen, then buckled down to work.

After a while, W stuck his head in to say "Hi". I asked, "Why do I have a new computer?" He replied, "You ordered one." I had no answer to that; I vaguely recalled a conversation with him, in which I had wearily agreed to the model he suggested. (The university has switched from buying computers to renting them, and the attrition list had gotten down to me.) I had almost immediately forgotten about it.

Apparently, the new computers had arrived, unexpectedly, on Tuesday. I didn't come in that day, having no classes, so the guru had simply gone ahead, transferring all of my files and setting up the dual monitor. (The old computer had to go, but no one said anything about the old monitor; that's why there are two now.) It's probably better that way; if he'd come to do that on a day I was actually in the office, it would have disrupted things mightily.

I'm giving serious thought to going to dual-monitor at home. I do still have the monitor from my old computer, although I'm not sure it's W7 compatible. If not, I'll just get a new monitor....
