Lo, a Miracle!
Aug. 31st, 2014 09:00 pmHere is the sequence of events, as regards my Kindle.
Some time back, it began being very sluggish, with frequent reboots. I complained of this online.
kk1raven suggested that I reset to the factory defaults and reload from my Calibre backups.
The machine would not let me do this. I tried once, and was informed that the application could not be completed, and I should try again. I tried again, with the same results. I began deleting items manually; each deletion was excruciatingly slow, and with ca. 250 items, this would have been a prolonged procedure. Ultimately, I made a third try at the reset, which culminated in the Kindle locking up, about a third of the way into a reboot. I set it aside, and publicly mourned its demise.
A couple of days later, on a whim, I tried turning it on again. It informed me that the battery was completely dry, so, curious, I plugged it in to recharge. Lo and behold, when the recharge was complete, it was behaving properly again. It had fooled me in this way before, so I went ahead with the factory reset, and then reloaded everything.
It worked. I haven't gotten around to restocking the various collections, and it took me a while to re-find my places in the several books I was reading, but it hasn't given me any trouble since.
Murphy does not rule everything; occasionally, the Fairy Godmother Department (tm RAH) steps in.
