Moving

After nearly a quarter-century of promises, the new science building is ready for occupancy. All of the science departments, mine among them, are preparing to move before the beginning of next semester.

The math department is not, however, moving to the new science building. No; we are moving to, um, the athletics center. We will roost there for an estimated two years while the old science building is renovated. Then we will move back into the old building.

There will be changes. We currently occupy the first floor (and I remember when we had only half of that floor); when we return, we will have the second floor and half of the third (unless it's the other way around). We'll need the room; the new Qualitative Reasoning course, which almost all non-science students must take, will require us to hire a bunch of new Lecturers....

Anyhow, that's why I went on campus today, despite having no classes; I had to start packing up my office. I've boxed up all of the books, except for a) a few which I'll be bringing home, b) some books which I'll have to dispose of - duplicates, obsolete textbooks, and a book on the history of steelmaking which somehow appeared in my office - and c) the textbooks I'm currently using. Next I have to decide what I'm going to do with all of the mathematics magazines I've accumulated in the last twenty-some years.

Sigh. Things will be better when it's over. I just have to keep reminding myself of that.
