One Way and Another
Aug. 1st, 2013 08:47 pmIt is perfectly within Buster and Gracie's power to go into the back yard by themselves. It's a bit of a roundabout - the doggie doors lead through the garage, which is in the front of the house - but they can get there, and they know how.
Nonetheless, it is somehow Much More Exciting when I let them out into the back yard via the back porch. Toward late afternoon or evening, whenever I get up from a long session on the computer, Gracie will dance in front of me and then dash toward the back door. When I turn the lock, Buster joins her; when I open the door to the back porch, they burst through (Buster frequently landing on top of Gracie, in their mutual excitement), and then quiver, muzzles pointing at the handle of the door to the yard. When that door opens, they race into the yard, barking, bumping into each other until Buster's longer legs put him into the lead. This afternoon, they surprised a rabbit, which managed to get away with room to spare.
Gracie usually spends only a short time out there, doing her business and tracking whatever vermin-traces she finds. Buster diligently patrols the perimeter, loudly defying any who might intrude on the home territory, only returning (if then) when I open the door again to the importunate Gracie.
This is actually one of the highlights of my day.
