Preconceptions
May. 19th, 2013 05:27 pmWith the onset of warm-to-hot weather, I've decided to go for lighter meals - soups and such. This week, I've decided to make potato soup. I'm using a different recipe than last time, out of Supercookery. This one calls for leeks, which I've never yet used. At Shop'n'Save this morning, I couldn't find the leeks; I finally had to ask one of the stockers, who pointed me in the right direction.
It turned out there were two reasons I hadn't found them. The lesser reason was that, though they were labeled, the label was one of the small ones, right near the produce, rather than the big overhead tags. The greater reason was that I didn't know what leeks looked like. I was picturing something green-onion-ish, which was actually not that far off, if the green onions had been meant for Gargantua's table. Seeing them, I thought of the description of the pickle in Arlo Guthrie's "Motorcycle (Significance of the Pickle) Song"....
I survived the shock, and purchased them and the other necessaries. I haven't made the soup yet; that'll wait for tomorrow after I get home, or more likely Tuesday morning. The book says it's cheap, quick, and easy. We shall see.
