Sunday Music: A Decade of Steely Dan
Feb. 10th, 2013 12:19 pmAlbum Title: A Decade of Steely Dan
Why I Bought It: After hearing "Deacon Blues" on the radio, back in the day, I bought their Aja LP, and liked it quite a bit. Later, when I switched over to CDs, I picked this one up. (It shares exactly two songs with Aja - but one of them is "Deacon Blues"!)
What I Like (Smooth): "Deacon Blues". They got a name for the winners in the world / I want a name when I lose / They call Alabama the Crimson Tide / Call me Deacon Blues. Just a nice, mellow, bluesy song.
What I Like (Catchy): "East St. Louis Toodle-oo". A pure instrumental; I don't normally comment on those, but this one's good and whistleable.
What I Like (Nostalgic): "Hey Nineteen". It really doesn't take much time before you start seeing these incredibly young people.... I love the fact that this one came out just a little before Aretha got her second wind.
What I Like (Weird): "Do It Again". This really sounds like the plot (or part of it) for a Western movie, but I have a hard time visualizing what kind of Western movie. Fun to listen to, though.
What I Don't Like (Huh?): "Bodhisattva". I have no idea what the point of this one is. Maybe it's a satiric slap at Westerners who take up ersatz Buddhism because it's cool, but I dunno. It doesn't appeal to me at all.
Overall: A mixed bag. I get little to nothing out of "Black Friday", "Babylon Sisters", "Bad Sneakers", and "Kid Charlemagne", but "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Reeling in the Years", "F.M.", "Peg", and "My Old School" make up for a lot. The balance is fairly positive, I guess.
