Perdido Street Station
Nov. 14th, 2012 12:48 pmI just finished rereading Perdido Street Station, which is an astonishing novel, and I began to wonder about awards - how did it stand in the Hugo and Nebula balloting for Best Novel. Wikipedia told me that it was nominated for both awards, but won neither. Unfortunately, the SFWA doesn't seem to give out standings, but only names the winners. However, I was able to find the standings for the 2002 Hugo award for Best Novel. PSS placed fourth; here are the finalists, in order.
My opinion only, of course.
American Gods, Neil GaimanWow. I have all six of those, and that is a very impressive list. I'm not that fond of Cosmonaut Keep, and I would probably rate Passage a little and The Chronoliths rather more behind the other three; but that was a very fine year for F/SF novels.
Passage, Connie Willis
The Curse of Chalion, Lois McMaster Bujold
Perdido Street Station, China MiƩville
Cosmonaut Keep, Ken McLeod
The Chronoliths, Robert Charles Wilson
My opinion only, of course.
