stoutfellow: Joker (Joker)
Album Title: Celine Dion

Why I Bought It: I had recently seen the video of "If You Asked Me To".

What I Like (Sad): "I Love You, Goodbye". What can I say? I'm a sucker for this kind of song. Honorable Mention: "With This Tear".

What I Like (Swirling Melody): "Halfway to Heaven". I particularly like the hornwork in the verse that begins "I don't want to live my life in moderation". (That verse is different in structure from the others, and serves as something of a climax. There's probably a technical term for it.)

What I Like (Show Her That You're Sure): "If I Were You". A sweet, clear melody, chiding a friend for neglecting his love.

Overall: I enjoyed this album well enough to buy her next three albums. Some of what's here is a bit overwrought - a flaw she fell victim to more often as time passed: "Did You Give Enough Love", for instance. "Beauty and the Beast" is here, too, foreshadowing her later turn towards ballads, but there's not much of that here yet. There's some nice imagery about the Moon in "If You Could See Me Now".... I like her voice; if she hasn't done enough material worthy of it, well, she's not alone in that. (Also, there are some songs she should never have attempted - but that's a story for another album.)
