Album Title: Blueberry Hill
Why I Bought It: I had a vague memory of my brother having a Davis album when I was a kid, and an even vaguer memory of liking it.
What I Like (Tender): "Walk Softly, Darling". Davis rarely achieves sweetness, but comes close in this plea with her lover to treat her well. It's a slightly sadder cousin of Abba's "Andante Andante".
What I Like (Hopeful): "Optimistic". The pleasures of the beginning of a love affair....
What I Like (Classic): "The End of the World". I also have a cover of this one by Herman's Hermits; I think I prefer this one. Another approach to sweetness.
What I Don't Like (Hypocrisy): "Homebreaker". This is a self-defense by a woman who broke up another's marriage, blaming the other woman for neglecting her husband. I find the song itself somewhat offensive, and it's made worse by appearing on the same album with "Give Me Death", in which a woman pleads with a judge to change her sentence for the passion-murder of her husband and his lover.
Overall: This isn't a very good album, I think. Many of the songs are covers - "Daddy Sang Bass", "Little Arrows", "Son of a Preacher Man", "Angel of the Morning", and of course the title track. Unfortunately, her voice isn't really suited to most of them. "The End of the World", above, is an exception, as is "Hold Me Tight". I feel no temptation whatever to seek out any more of her albums.
