Sunday Music: The Best of the Moody Blues
Jul. 8th, 2012 02:46 pmAlbum Title: The Best of the Moody Blues
Note: I have quite a few Moody Blues albums. Since this is a "Best of" compilation, it overlaps with several of them. Here, I'll only discuss songs that this album doesn't share with any other in my collection.
What I Like (Melancholy): "Forever Autumn". Soft, gentle, and nostalgic, vividly recalling piled leaves and brisk winds. "You always loved this time of year..."
What I Like (Searching): "I Know You're Out There Somewhere". Technically not a Moody Blues piece, I'm told. I love the swirling melody of the accompaniment in the chorus, and the soft but driving verses.
What I Like (Summoning): "Voices in the Sky". The singer, haunted by "the sound of the sea / Calling to me", questions everyone he hears - bluebird, nightingale, an old man, children playing - about the hidden meaning of their calls. Image-laden and evocative.
Overall: Most of the (nonoverlapping) songs on this album appeal to me: "Your Wildest Dreams", "Go Now", "Question", "The Voice".... I confess, though, that "Steppin' in a Slide Zone" just bewilders me, and I don't get much out of "Blue Guitar". Still, what's good here is very good.
