Jun. 4th, 2012 10:47 amSo the big astronomical news is that in about four billion years the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy will collide and merge into a single elliptical galaxy. There's been some mention of Andromeda's satellite, M33, which will also get swallowed up (and may collide with the Milky Way first). Here is a good reference, with an animation.
But nobody seems to mention the Milky Way's satellites: the Greater and Lesser Magellanic Clouds, plus eight or so less famous dwarf galaxies. What happens to them? Anybody know?
