The semester is over. I finished grading and submitted grades this afternoon (and I do not miss the days when we had to trot over to the admin building to hand in paper copies of the grades). So, what's next?

I haven't heard back from my former Master's student regarding our joint paper; I'm going to send her another e-mail tomorrow, and hopefully I'll be able to submit that paper in the next couple of weeks. This summer, as far as research is concerned, I'll continue working on the typology of polygons, in the hope of writing a paper this fall. Not forgetting my other Master's student, who's researching simple closed geodesics on pyramids. Teaching-wise, I do need to look over the textbook for the junior-level abstract algebra course and start planning for that.

The big thing this summer is the long-awaited refurbishment of the basement into a library. First, I need to go down and clean it up - get rid of cobwebs and debris. Then I'll start looking around for a contractor. I've been talking about this for a bit less than twenty years; it's time to put up or shut up.

I don't plan on much travelling this summer - a trip out to California for my father's birthday next month, but that's about it. I do, however, plan on checking out some of the local attractions that I've managed to never go to, most notably the St. Louis Zoo. There are also supposed to be some pretty decent museums in that general vicinity.

I really really need to get B&G to the groomer, and to schedule dental appointments for both of them. (Buster's apparent aversion to Milk-Bones has diminished to something just this side of apathy; he'll take them, wander over to his chewing-on-treats area, and either eat them or put them down and gaze at them meditatively. If he leaves them too long, Gracie steals them.)

I'm a bit behind pace on reading so far this year, but summer is usually when I pick up the pace. Currently, I'm reading Definiteness, Roger Parkinson's The Peninsular War, and Steven Erikson's House of Chains. I've been doing a lot of rereading, too - Niven, Octavia Butler, Ward Moore, Julia Ecklar, Janet Kagan, Vernor Vinge....

I'm also thinking about revamping my financial and library dbs, but who knows if I'll find the vim for that? It's looking to be a hot summer; the last couple of days have been more July than May.

But all that can wait. For now, the prescription is for a little R&R. :stretches and yawns:
