I don't have any classes on Fridays, but I've scheduled weekly meetings with one of my Master's students then (and also on Tuesday, but that's a side issue). I only spend a couple of hours, most of it taken up with that meeting. Today was a good session: he's been reading some other papers on polyhedral geodesics, including one I haven't read, and it's given him what looks like a very promising lead - not only on the specific problem he's currently concentrating on, but possibly even on the broader problem that I originally gave him. He's applied to several nearby universities - Missouri at St. Louis, St. Louis University - for their doctoral programs, and just received a letter from the Math Department Chair at SLU which sounded very promising - even identifying a possible advisor, which the Chair called "a good match" for his interests. I'm very pleased for him, and interested in seeing what he comes up with next.
I also received a call from Human Resources; they want to set up a brief informal photography session, presumably connected with my completing a quarter-century here. I'm mulling over whether to stick with my winter look or get a haircut before the appointment (which is Monday after next). Comfort, or style?
The geometry seminar has resumed; I'm giving them an overview of my current research. My student and L missed the first session, but they'll be there for the second round. I'm sort of stalled on the research at the moment; I've picked the low-hanging fruit, and I'm beginning to get a glimmer of some general patterns, but I still lack understanding. Maybe talking it out in front of the others will jar something loose.
Most of the Amazon order has come; only the book on Chinese and the new Mercy Thompson remain. I glanced through the book on the Dravidian languages already, mainly looking for the author's opinion of the proposed relationships between that family and others. I was especially curious about his evaluation of the linkage between Elamite and Dravidian. He was pretty noncommittal about that (and various other proposals), but his review of the evidence made it clear that there's nothing persuasive as yet about any of them.
My satellite box seems to have stopped being flaky. I can't help wondering, on the basis of this and other evidence, whether Dish starts messing with your reception if you're a little late with your payments....
