Album Title: 16 Biggest Hits, Johnny Cash
Why I Bought It: I already had At Folsom Prison, which is a fairly good album, but a bit one-note. I wanted something that showed more of Cash's range. (All right: I wanted "A Boy Named Sue".)
What I Like (Fun): "A Boy Named Sue", of course. Thoroughly stupid, but it still brings a smile. Honorable Mention: "One Piece at a Time".
What I Like (Grim): "Man in Black". Not very melodic, but pointed. One of the strands that led to country music originated in the blues, and this one's a stark reminder of that fact. Honorable Mention: "The Ballad of Ira Hayes".
What I Like (Spooky): "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky". I also have Roy Clark's version, but Johnny did it better.
What I Don't Like (Preachy): "Don't Take Your Guns to Town". Dumbass kid. Dishonorable Mention: "Understand Your Man"
Overall: More good than bad. Cash's version of "Daddy Sang Bass" is pretty good - better than Skeeter Davis's, frex. "The Legend of John Henry's Hammer", "Ring of Fire", "Folsom Prison Blues", "In the Jailhouse Now" - that's a pretty good lineup.
