Break Week

So, what have I been up to, now that the semester's over?

1) We had that committee meeting on Monday. It was an open meeting, and almost the whole department showed up, but we made considerable progress, and the rancor of the last faculty meeting seemed in abeyance. We're not done yet, but I have hopes of finishing it soon.

2) The guy who mows my lawn told me this is probably his last year. His partner wants to go back to school and get a degree in Business Administration, and he himself is just getting tired - the job seems more physically wearing every year. So I guess I'll have to look for a new team next year.

3) Yesterday, I met with a graduate student who wants to do her Master's project with me. I showed her the problem I set my last Master's student, and she seemed excited by the idea of tackling a question that no one has the answer to. I'm not sure what problem to suggest, but I'll come up with something.

4) I took Buster to the groomer today; he was looking extraordinarily sheep-like. As usual, I asked for a puppy cut, and it looks good on him.

5) I'm re-watching my B5 DVDs; I'm still in season one, which was (to my mind) rather weaker than the later ones, but the last episode I watched was "The War Prayer", which includes Londo's memorable anecdote about his aged father - "My shoes are too tight, but it does not matter, because I have forgotten how to dance."

6) I wrote and ran the algorithms for my latest theorem. The results were somewhat disappointing; the only simple closed geodesics they revealed were the three that we already knew about. However, the theorem only applies to a bit less than half of all capped cubes, and there's hope - in fact, certainty - that there are more to be found in the cases that aren't covered. I have a general plan of attack for the rest, but it involves a tedious case analysis, and I haven't gotten up the vim to go after it yet.

Mostly, then, I'm taking it easy - reading, loafing, and messing with the computer. I do have to get the household projects going pretty soon, and as soon as the official break is over (week after next) our research team has to start writing up our results. But - well, tomorrow is another day.
