Year's End
Dec. 5th, 2009 09:05 amWinter is definitely closing in. We had our first (admittedly minimalist) snowfall last night; when I got up the grass was frosty and there were small piles of white on the fenceposts out back. We haven't gotten above freezing for two or three days, although we're supposed to get a bit of a warmup early next week.
In a little while, I'll be taking Buster over to the groomer; I hope to get Gracie over there sometime next week as well. I'm trying to find someone to dogsit while I'm in California, but haven't gotten any volunteers yet. (I had been planning to kennel them, but the cost has gone up quite a bit since the last time I did that.)
One more week of lectures, then finals week, then it's off to San Diego. The timing's going to be a little tight. The family get-together is planned for Saturday the 19th, but I'm giving a final on that Thursday, in a largish class - about 55 students. I'll probably fly out Friday afternoon, or even evening.
Meanwhile, I've got a date with a videocamera. The College of Arts and Sciences is putting together a promotional video, and every department has been asked to participate. The stuff we're doing in the geometry seminar, mucking about with polyhedra, is probably the most visual work in the department, so on Friday someone will be stopping by the seminar to film us. (The last time I appeared in promotional materials was back when I was an undergraduate at SIUE. I was in a small seminar - just the professor and two students - and a picture was taken of me and the professor at the chalkboard. He was a little guy, maybe a little taller than I and lightly built. I don't remember what we were talking about, but it looks as though I'm furious with him about something.)
Looking forward to the break....
