Miscellany
Jun. 29th, 2009 09:01 am1. The hot spell's finally broken, at least for the time being; we're not supposed to crack 90F for at least the next few days. Gotta get after those weeds before the heat comes back on.
2. A few weeks ago I finally broke down and bought two new pairs of shoes. (I tend to hang onto shoes until the hole goes all the way through the sole, with a minimum diameter of half an inch.) The athletic shoes are very comfortable, even if they take a while to put on. The dress shoes are a bit less comfortable, and I need to get a shoe horn. (Do they still sell shoe horns? If so, where?)
3. Today's the retirement party for our department secretary. She's been there almost as long as I have, and had held positions elsewhere in the university for some years before that. We'll miss her; she's had time to learn all of our idiosyncracies, and to know who needs to be prodded on what. Also, she knows all the in-jokes....
4. I've finished reading The Shadow of the Wind and the book on Genghis Khan, and both of them deserve reviews. Soon, soon. (I'm feeling pretty lethargic just now, though.)
